Objective: By the end of this lesson, primary students will understand the basics of Shamatha meditation, experience its benefits, and utilize ICT tools to enhance their meditation practice.

Duration: 45-60 minutes
Materials:
- Meditation cushions or comfortable seating
- A quiet and peaceful environment
- ICT devices (laptops, tablets, or smartphones) with internet access
- Shamatha meditation videos or audio guides (pre-screened for suitability)
- Whiteboard or chalkboard and markers/chalk
- Timer or stopwatch
Lesson Plan:
Introduction (10 minutes):
- Begin by discussing with students the concept of mindfulness and meditation in simple terms, relating it to paying attention to our thoughts and feelings without judgment.
- Explain the benefits of meditation, such as reducing stress, improving focus, and promoting emotional well-being.
- Introduce the specific meditation technique for the day: Shamatha meditation, which focuses on calming the mind by observing the breath.
Preparing the Environment (5 minutes):
- Create a calming and comfortable space in the classroom for meditation, ensuring minimal distractions.
- Distribute meditation cushions or arrange chairs in a circle for students to sit comfortably.
Guided Shamatha Meditation (15 minutes):
- Play a pre-selected Shamatha meditation video or audio guide that is suitable for primary students. Ensure it is accessible through ICT devices.
- Encourage students to sit quietly and follow the instructions in the meditation guide, which may include focusing on the breath, acknowledging thoughts without getting caught up in them, and returning attention to the breath whenever the mind wanders.
ICT Integration (10 minutes):
- Divide students into small groups and provide each group with an ICT device (laptop, tablet, or smartphone).
- Instruct the students to explore age-appropriate meditation apps or websites that offer guided Shamatha meditation sessions.
- Guide them in finding suitable apps and websites, emphasizing the importance of choosing those that are reputable, user-friendly, and free from distractions or inappropriate content.
Reflection and Discussion (10 minutes):
- Gather the students together and lead a discussion on their experience with Shamatha meditation and the ICT tools they used.
- Ask students to share how they felt during the meditation and whether they found ICT helpful in their practice.
- Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of using ICT for meditation, encouraging critical thinking and responsible technology use.
Closure (5 minutes):
- Summarize the key points of the lesson, emphasizing the value of Shamatha meditation for calming the mind and improving focus.
- Encourage students to practice meditation regularly, both with and without the use of ICT.
- Conclude the lesson with a short guided meditation session to leave the students feeling calm and centered.
Homework:
- Assign students to practice Shamatha meditation for a few minutes daily using the ICT tools they explored during the lesson.
- Ask them to keep a brief journal of their experiences with meditation and any observations they make over the week

DeleteAs said by our friends here, we practice mind training in our school too. But then I hardly find any impact, children are not being able to concentrate on their work and becoming very aggressive too. Might be I as an instructor failed mosh.

DeleteMeditation for young children is a challenge at all times,we need to make it a gentle experience for them.As teachers,we need loads of patience,sometimes even a 3 minute session does not go as planned,but being patient and flexible helps .
